Choosing Urban Christian Education Schools

By Cynthia Harris

A majority of kids in inner towns grow under single parents. Cases of child abuse, drug abuse, dropping out of school and teen pregnancies are thus prevalent. For parents who want their kids to avoid these things, public schools are not an option. However, locating urban Christian education programs is not a walk in the pack. Your children will have the right studies if you use the following guide to select these programs.

In urban areas, Christian academies are scarce. The common ones are the public. If you are living in these places and you want you kid to grow knowing Christ and the Bible, ensure you pick an academy that is close to where you live. As much as you need a religious school, you should not have to drive for hours every morning and evening to take kids to school. Pick an institution that is around the corner for convenience.

The next tip is the training and the qualifications of all the teachers. Religious programs are not perfect or utopian. They are faced by similar challenges that face public schools. However, check the teachers since they are what will determine the teachings they will receive. They are the people to instill Godly habits in the children. They, therefore, need to have proper training and have knowledge of the teachings of Christ. The educators must also have faith in the Word of God.

Overcrowded schools are a red flag. If the ratio of students to teachers is large, the educators can only manage to monitor the progress of very few students. Others will be left ragging behind which leads to poor performance. When you visit a program, be sure to ask how many students are allocated to a teacher. The number should be at least ten to fifteen kids per teacher. There will be enough interaction to ensure the kids get the best out of the lessons.

The environment of these institutions is also crucial to check. Look for an institution or program with a safe environment physically, spiritually and emotionally. The physical setting of these schools must be safe so that the kids can learn and grow without any harm. The program must have strict measures in place to address bullying which affects kids emotionally. Since the institution has kids from different cultures, differences might arise but students must be taught to handle them.

Co-curricular activities must be considered too. Apart from teaching and encouraging biblical teachings, the academy you select must have a curriculum that creates time for co-curricular activities like athletics and clubs. They enable children to realize their potential outside class to face the outside world after school. Avoid those who lay emphasis only on studies and not extracurricular activities.

Moreover, the reputation of the academy is also crucial. If the school has a website, you can check it online. This will give you a chance to go through comments and feedback from parents and students who have undergone the program. If most of the feedback or reviews are negative, look somewhere else.

Lastly, transferring your child from one school to another every time he or she completes one level is going to affect academic performance. Due to that, one should choose an academy that has kindergarten and senior levels so that the kid studies in the same school all through.
