The Plight Of Missing Immigrant Children

By Carolyn Martin

When it comes to news in the United States, immigration is on the forefront. For, as a result of the government separating children from parents at the border, there are now many missing immigrant children. While some have now been reunited, there are still hundreds, if not over a thousand whom remain lost in the system.

While Attorney General Jeff Sessions is responsible for the current immigration crisis, it is important to note that others whom also carry responsibility. For, while there have been a number of executive orders which have been penned during the current administration, no such action has been taken with regards to reuniting parents with children.

The crisis became more of an issue once pictures were distributed of children being held in dog cages or housed like prisoners in a chain link fenced area. Whether due to the large numbers, a lack of supervision or criminal activity, there has also never been well documented and known acts of physical and sexual violence against those awaiting asylum or deportation.

When kids are taking care of babies, there is a problem. For, many of those in charge of taking care of the youngest of these children often have no experience whatsoever in child care. Whereas, there have also been reports of many being physically or sexually abused, or both at multiple locations while awaiting a reunion. While there has been no proof of such allegations, neither has there been denial on the part of the government or staff at many of these temporary housing facilities.

It is no doubt that this event will go down as one of the worse decisions regarding immigration in history. For, the United States is a country that was largely built by immigrants. In fact, many of the original citizens immigrated from other countries through Ellis Island.

Some families have been reunited with the help of case workers or attorneys. While this is great for those individuals, there are still hundreds waiting in the wings whom the government is unable to reunite due to a lack of information. For, while the families were being separated, it appears no record keeping was taking place.

The Health and Human Services division of the government have now chosen to house those still absent from parents in tents at multiple military bases. In many cases, these are located near border check points and are located in some of the hottest areas of the South. While the government continues to process the parents or relatives, many of these children remain at risk of never being relocated.

While there are lessons to be learned with regards to the current situation, there will no doubt still be difficulties with regards to immigration and the Zero Tolerance policy set by, whom many believe to be, a very racist Attorney General. As such, it will be interesting to see how this issue and others will effect the upcoming mid-term and 2020 Presidential election.
